This blog, Business Twitter Uses, examines not only how
business is using Twitter, the rationale for that use and its efficacy but also
how Twitter and its ever increasing applications is changing business itself.
When used properly, Twitter can improve almost every aspect of business.
The emphasis here is on properly and the Twitter community makes that
decision by its word of mouth “tweets” and by who does and doesn’t follow
a business.
Because the means to search and track this kind of demographic data is
available, Twitter is becoming one of the most important market research
tools for business. Although Twitter’s membership may be small in
comparison to Facebook and MySpace, it is growing rapidly. One service
reports that over 50% of Twitter users use it for business purposes. Also,
many of these business users are in important positions within their companies.
We will track the growth of Twitter, its changing demographics, the useful
tools springing up around it and how all of these fit together dynamically.
Dynamically is the operative word here because Twitter and the Twitterverse
are changing almost daily.
Creative minds and imaginations are creating very useful tools for Twitter.
Those apps are changing Twitter and how it is used in ways beyond the
anticipation of its founders. Evan Williams, CEO and co-founder of Twitter
so stated in a speech to the TED conference recently.
However there is still a lot misinformation and disinformation about Twitter
and its usefulness (much of it from newspapers and other media trying to
trivialize another threat to their dwindling readership, advertising revenue
and bottom line).
This will be a stimulating journey watching Twitter grow and be morphed
by the apps being developed for it as well as how its members find new
ways to make use of its realtime relevance to their activities and lives.
It is interesting to note that the mundaneness of many, if not most, of its
tweet conversations is the glue that holds the community together. One
scientist and researcher compares those conversations to what is referred
to as “grooming” behavior among other primates.
Well all you “nitpickers” come join with me as we build and contribute to
this homely but useful tool and community we know as Twitter. Watch it
grow with me. Watch it morph and change its shape and functions almost
daily. Who knows when the next plane will land on the Hudson River to
allow Twitter to show its real-time efficacy at getting the word out? Let’s
hope it’s a good long while. Twitter and its members will demonstrate its
mettle without disasters as new ways are found to put it to work for
business.
I’m looking forward to tweeting and blogging with you as we Tweet our
way into the future – connecting-conversing-building relationships by
sharing stories and little pieces of our daily lives-asking questions –
finding answers – learning – growing – building – digging our way out of
the financial and political disarray around us – being positive as we help
each other move forward in our own ways in our own lives. Listening
and giving help in what ever way we can, whenever we get the chance.
